When a car accident results in a head injury
On behalf of Law Offices of Steven H. Dorne posted in Car Accidents on February 7, 2018.
Have you ever experienced an injury that seemed mild at first, but became more severe over time? This is the case for many people who sustain head injuries in car accidents. These injuries can take days, weeks or even months to appear. In fact, some survivors may not even realize how seriously they have been injured.
Though head injuries vary widely in severity, even small ones can cause big problems. Memory loss, diminished cognitive abilities and long-term pain are just a few potential consequences for victims.
What can cause a head injury in a car accident?
Head injuries occur when the skull strikes an outside object with significant force. In rare instances, they can also occur when a sharp object pierces the skull. In car accidents, head injuries often occur when a driver’s head strikes the dashboard or steering wheel, often causing a concussion, contusion, skull fracture or hematoma. A concussion may also result after a whiplash-type injury that causes the head and brain to shake quickly back and forth. Penetrative injuries can happen when glass, metal fragments or other sharp items break through the skull.
Head injury symptoms
There are a few common symptoms to watch out for that could indicate a severe head injury. Remember, head injuries may not initially seem serious. Some of these symptoms may take a while to appear. Once they do manifest, symptoms can last anywhere from a few days to several years.
- Dizziness
- Confusion
- Nausea or vomiting
- Changes in mood or behavior
- Dilated pupils
- Slurred speech
- Fluid draining from ears and nose
- Loss of consciousness
- Memory loss
What to do after suffering a head injury
Victims who have suffered a head injury should seek medical treatment as soon as possible. It is crucial to receive a speedy diagnosis and treatment to prevent further damage. It would then be wise to contact a personal injury attorney to assess whether you are able to receive damages for your injury.
