Car crash on Maryland’s Route 50 closes multiple lanes

As readers in the Washington D.C. area may have heard, a two-vehicle accident involving a tractor-trailer and another vehicle occurred at about 7:30 p.m. last Wednesday resulting in the closure of multiple lanes on U.S. Route 50. According to eyewitness reports, the two vehicles hit struck each other with enough force that the tractor-trailer’s axles were torn off causing the truck to spin and end up facing the opposite direction.

Police statements indicate that the truck driver was transported via helicopter to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center. One of the drivers involved in the accident was seen walking after the crash and although he appeared to be shaken up he did not appear to be seriously injured. Following the accident, one of Route 50’s westbound lanes was closed off, as well as all of its eastbound lanes. The closure lasted several hours while Maryland State Police attempted to reconstruct and investigate the cause of the accident.
