Any bike rider will tell you there are fewer thrills more enjoyable than hopping on a motorcycle and hitting the road. There is a distinct intimacy one experiences while on a motorcycle. There is a reason why motorcycle riding is so popular in the United States, including with many riders from the Rockville, Maryland area. Whether you are a motorcycle driver or not, it is important to recognize that those on bikes also are

Elder abuse is a growing and overlooked problem. Many elderly people who need extensive care are not able to speak up for themselves, and those that do speak up about neglect are not always heard or helped. This is part of the reason why the most vulnerable are also the most likely to experience abuse, both by family caregivers and in long-term care institutions, including nursing homes. Nursing home abuse occurs when workers do not take the time to care for residents the way they should, but it can also

Any time a person leaves their home, they are at risk of a potential accident. According to statistics from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, also known as OSHA, approximately 65 percent of construction sites use scaffolding, lifts or ladders at the jobsite. Since a vast majority of these jobsites use scaffolding as a temporary means of elevating workers, it should come as no surprise that scaffolding accidents and injuries related to falls are among the most common at construction sites. Due to the inherent risks of workers who are elevated, it is not uncommon for these injuries to be serious, catastrophic or even deadly.

Many people from Rockville, Maryland, the surrounding area and throughout the United States are aware of the potential dangers of distracted driving, but many are not necessarily aware of just how dangerous it can be. While truck drivers come from all walks of life, many, particularly in California, are lower-income immigrants who speak minimal English. Yet, they hold significant responsibilities to haul essential goods for high-profile retailers that include Costco, Target and Home Depot. Apparently, those responsibilities are coming at a significant cost, both financially and to drivers’ well-being. The USA Today Network conducted a yearlong investigation that revealed the dangerous illegal practices employed by Southern California-based port trucking companies. Perhaps the most significant issue involves businesses forcing drivers to finance their own trucks. Drivers end up

A catastrophic fire in an apartment building across the pond has shown a bright light on orders given to people in tall structures when a blaze erupts. Specifically scrutinized is the long-accepted and seemingly counterintuitive rule to stay in place and far away from the stairs. Residents of London’s 24-story Grenfell Tower heard those demands after the fire broke out on a lower floor. That strategy fell tragically short as the flames spread and soon engulfed the building. Trapped residents had limited options. Some jumped to their deaths rather than

While many think of summer as a time to unwind, parents of teenage drivers have a much more sobering statistic to consider: a greater number of teens are killed in auto accidents during the hundred days following Memorial Day than any another time period of the year. This may sound like a jarring statement, but it is meant to bring awareness to the fact that over 5,000 youthful drivers were killed in auto accidents during the same time period of days between 2010 and 2014. And that figure is only increasing. According
